Most people write AI prompts like they're ordering coffee: "A beautiful sunset." The AI obliges — and gives you a generic, forgettable sunset that looks exactly like every other AI sunset.
The difference between mediocre AI visuals and stunning ones isn't the model — it's the prompt. Prompt engineering is the single highest-leverage skill in AI content creation.
The anatomy of a great prompt
A professional prompt has five layers:
Layer 1: Subject (what)
Be specific. Not "a person" — "a woman in her 60s with silver hair pulled back, wearing a weathered leather apron, hands covered in clay."
Layer 2: Action/Context (doing what)
What's happening? "She's looking down at a pottery wheel, mid-throw, focused expression, motion blur on the spinning clay."
Layer 3: Environment (where)
Set the scene. "Sunlit pottery studio, dust motes floating in shafts of afternoon light, shelves of unfinished ceramics in the background."
Layer 4: Technical specs (how)
Camera and lighting details. "Shot on 85mm f/1.4, shallow depth of field, warm golden hour lighting, cinematic color grading, 8K resolution."
Layer 5: Style reference (in what style)
Art direction. "In the style of atmospheric documentary photography, muted earth tones, film grain."

Combined: "A woman in her 60s with silver hair pulled back, wearing a weathered leather apron, hands covered in clay, looking down at a pottery wheel mid-throw, focused expression, motion blur on spinning clay. This is a prompt that produces. Let's break down why.
Advanced techniques
Negative prompting
Tell the model what you DON'T want. This is just as important as what you DO want.
Negative: "plastic skin, oversaturated colors, symmetrical composition, artificial lighting, CGI look, perfect faces."
